Peonies thrive in a sunny or semi-shaded position. They prefer a well-drained, rich, fertile soil, so enrich the soil before planting with plenty of well-rotted manure or garden compost, mixing it in thoroughly and deeply. Plant herbaceous peonies at a depth of approximately 5cm below the soil surface, as planting too deeply may delay flowering. Water regularly until the plants are fully established.
After establishment, herbaceous peonies require minimal maintenance and will flourish for many years if left undisturbed. However, they will benefit from a spring mulch of well-rotted manure or garden compost applied around the plant's base. Be patient, as plants may take several years to establish before producing their magnificent peony flowers.
