- Features twisted branches with yellow catkins
- Grows and spreads up to 5m when fully established
- Suits fertile, well-drained soil
Boasting uniquely twisted branches, the Corkscrew Hazel ‘Contorta’ offers a distinctive presence in any garden. Come February, elegant yellow catkins dangle gracefully from the bare stems, preceding the unfurling of small, contorted green leaves. This deciduous shrub, with its crooked stems, presents a superb feature for winter borders, woodland areas, and oriental planting schemes.
The Corkscrew Hazel ‘Contorta’ is hardy and easy to cultivate, and has received an RHS Award of Garden Merit. Florists also greatly appreciate the twisted stems. Choose a position in sun or semi-shade and plant in fertile, well-drained soil. This Corylus will tolerate alkaline soils, proving useful in chalky areas. Feed and water regularly until established.
Once established, the Corkscrew Hazel requires minimal maintenance. To encourage fresh, contorted stems for the following season, the stems can be cut back to just a few buds from the base of the plant. Alternatively, remove any crossing, damaged, or misplaced stems in late winter or early spring.
Ideal for cottage gardens, cut flower gardens, specimen plants, and woodland gardens. Also suitable as a specimen plant.
