Product Information

  • Deep violet blooms with yellow centres
  • Great for fences, trees, or containers
  • Cut back yearly for easy maintenance

Clematis Étoile Violette presents a generous display of small, deep violet-purple blooms, each enhanced by a cluster of creamy-yellow stamens, from June to August. This vigorous clematis thrives when allowed to scramble amongst established trees and shrubs, its extended stems and delicate flowers enabling it to cover considerable distances without overwhelming nearby plants. Maintenance is straightforward; simply prune back to ground level annually.
When planting, ensure the climber is positioned deeply in moist, fertile, well-drained soil in a sunny or partially shaded location, with the top of the root ball approximately 7.5cm below the soil surface, to encourage the development of new shoots from the plant's base. Clematis prefers soil that is neither excessively wet nor dry; these conditions can be improved by incorporating well-rotted manure or garden compost. When cultivating Étoile Violette in containers, opt for a soil-based compost.
Guide the clematis onto a suitable support structure such as a trellis, wires, or a freestanding climbing frame. Provide regular feeding and watering throughout the growing season. Étoile Violette flowers on the current year’s growth in late summer. Prune Group 3 clematis in spring, before new growth begins, by cutting back all of the previous year’s stems to a pair of healthy buds approximately 20cm above ground level. In spring, apply a mulch of well-rotted manure or garden compost around the plant's base to protect the roots and retain soil moisture.
Ideal for patios, walls, fences and cottage gardens. Hardy. Position in sun, partial shade or shade. Expect a height of up to 500cm and a spread of up to 150cm.
