- Thrives in sun or semi-shade
- Produces sweet almond-scented purple-tinged blooms
- Perfect for walls and fences
Clematis ‘Elizabeth’ is a celebrated Montana variety, well-deserving of its RHS AGM. A vigorous grower, this clematis will readily cover walls and fences. Its purple-tinged foliage provides a striking backdrop to the sweet almond-scented blooms that arrive in late spring and early summer.
For best results, plant in a sunny or partially shaded spot, ensuring the climber is planted deeply in moist, fertile, well-drained soil. Position the top of the root ball 7.5cm (3") below soil level to encourage new shoots from the base. Clematis thrives in soil that is neither too wet nor too dry; improve poor soils with well-rotted manure or garden compost. When planting in patio containers, use a soil-based compost such as John Innes No.3.
Train your clematis onto a suitable support like trellis, wires, or a freestanding climbing frame. Water and feed regularly throughout the growing season. This variety flowers in early spring on the previous year’s growth, so prune in summer after flowering. As a group 1 Clematis, remove any damaged or dead stems, then cut back remaining stems to a pair of healthy buds to maintain size. In spring, mulch with well-rotted manure or garden compost to protect the roots and conserve moisture.
Ideal for patios, walls, fences, and cottage gardens. Hardy. Position in sun or semi-shade. Height: Up to 1000cm (393.7in). Spread: Up to 300cm (118.1in). Easy to grow. Easy aftercare.
