Evergreen Clematis Avalanche showcases ornate, heavily dissected leaves, providing a striking backdrop to glistening white flowers from early spring. This variety boasts some of the largest blooms, with flowers reaching up to four centimetres in diameter. Its non-clinging stems make it perfect for borders or for training onto an obelisk or trellis, creating a stunning display.
For optimal growth, position Clematis Avalanche in a sunny or semi-shaded location, planting it deeply in moist, fertile, well-drained soil. The root ball should be positioned approximately 7.5cm below soil level to encourage new shoots from the plant's base. Clematis thrives in soil that is neither excessively wet nor dry; improve soil conditions by incorporating well-rotted manure or garden compost. When planting in containers, opt for a soil-based compost.
Train your clematis onto a suitable support such as a trellis, wires, or a freestanding climbing frame. Regular feeding and watering throughout the growing season are essential. Clematis Avalanche blooms in early spring on the previous year’s growth. Prune Group One clematis in summer, after flowering, by removing any damaged or dead stems entirely and cutting back remaining stems to a pair of healthy buds to maintain size.
