- Vitamin C-rich citrus fruit
- Perfect for sunny spots
- Fruits can be juiced, zested or frozen
Citrus trees, a Mediterranean favourite, can flourish at home with a little winter care. Though the fruit takes about a year to mature, you'll soon enjoy home-grown, vitamin C-rich lemons, ideal for juices, jams, or chutneys. Freeze whole fruits for a refreshing, ice-cube-like addition to drinks. Lemon zest is also a versatile ingredient for both cooking and baking. These ellipsoidal, yellow fruits are visually appealing, so leave some on the plant for an attractive display.
Plant in a container or pot, using a blend of ericaceous compost and a neutral, soil-based compost like John Innes No. 3. Repot, maintaining the original soil level, and firm well. Water thoroughly and place in a well-lit spot away from cold draughts and radiators (4-12°C); a conservatory is ideal. From May to October, once frost risk has passed, move plants outdoors. Water generously in summer, misting leaves daily to boost humidity and deter pests. Feed every two weeks with citrus plant fertiliser.
Before frosts return, bring plants indoors. Reduce watering in winter, but avoid letting the plant dry out completely. Too much or too little water may cause fruit to drop.
