Bring a burst of autumnal colour to your garden with these stunning patio chrysanthemums. Expect a profusion of domed blooms in shades of yellow, pink, and ruby red from late August through to early November, making them perfect for brightening your garden in the autumn. With their strong stems and long-lasting flowers, they also make superb cut flowers for elegant indoor displays.
To cultivate these hardy chrysanthemum plants, pot them up and nurture them in a bright, frost-free environment. When the plants reach 15cm in height, pinch off the top 5cm of each stem; this encourages a bushier plant and a greater abundance of flowers. After the last frost, gradually acclimatise the chrysanthemums to outdoor conditions over a week to ten days before planting them in borders and containers using fertile, well-drained soil. Choose a sunny spot for planting.
Water regularly until the plants are fully established. In late autumn, apply a generous layer of mulch to protect the plant crowns during the winter months. Leave the flowered stems intact until spring to provide additional winter protection.
