Chempak Sulphur Chips provide an ideal soil base for healthy growth of ericaceous plants, which often struggle or show deficiencies in unsuitable soil. Designed to gradually reduce the pH content, these chips counteract limey conditions that most ericaceous (lime-hating) plants cannot tolerate.
Application: Apply 135g per square metre (4oz per sq. yd.) to lower the pH by approximately 0.5 to 1 unit. For best results, apply when the soil warms up and retest to see if further application is needed to achieve the desired pH. It is advisable to wait until the soil warms to see the effectiveness of this application. If the desired pH is not realised more sulphur will be needed.
Understanding Soil pH: Soil pH measures acidity or alkalinity on a scale of 0-14. A pH of 7 is neutral; lower values indicate acidity, and higher values indicate alkalinity (limey soil). For example, pH6 is acidic, pH7 is neutral, and pH8 is limey. DIY chemical or electronic test kits can be used to easily measure soil pH.
Maintaining Ideal Soil: Regular monitoring is crucial to prevent pH levels from rising again, particularly in chalky soils where lime can reappear. Apply more sulphur chips as needed to maintain the correct pH.
Plant Nutrition: Beyond pH adjustment, Chempak Sulphur Chips also supply sulphur, a vital major plant nutrient. They can also combat iron deficiency, which causes chlorosis (yellowing) in limey soils. While Chempak Iron offers a quick solution, correcting the soil condition provides a lasting remedy.
