Product Information

  • Delivers pear-shaped tubers
  • Offers creamy yellow flesh of first class flavour
  • Adapts well to multiple culinary uses

Charlotte' potatoes are a consistently popular second early salad variety, known for their pear-shaped, yellow-skinned, waxy tubers. These potatoes boast a creamy yellow flesh with a first-class flavour, delicious served hot or cold, eaten either hot or cold. Holding a RHS AGM, 'Charlotte' potatoes are a familiar sight in supermarkets. These organic 'Charlotte' potatoes are certified by The Soil Association.
For second early crops, begin planning from March. Chit the seed potatoes before planting by placing them in a cool, bright location (10°C / 50°F) to encourage sprouting. When growing second early potatoes, avoid planting in soil where potatoes have grown for the past two years in succession to minimise disease risk.
Choose a sheltered planting area with full sun and moist, well-drained soil. Enrich the soil with plenty of well-rotted manure. Plant potatoes in rows, spacing them 37cm (15”) apart, with 75cm (2’,6”) between rows. Place the seed potatoes in 10cm (4”) deep trenches and cover with soil. When shoots reach 20cm (8”), mound soil around them, leaving just a few centimetres visible. Repeat this process after another 3 weeks.
For those with limited space, consider growing potatoes in potato bags on the patio. Fill an 8-litre potato bag almost to the top with quality compost mixed with well-rotted manure. Carefully plant a single chitted potato into the compost, shoots pointing upwards, at a depth of 12cm (5”) from the soil surface. Place the bags in a sunny spot and water regularly to maintain moist compost.
Keep rows weeded and potato plants well-watered throughout the growing season. If frost threatens, draw soil around the stems or move potato bags to a frost-free shed or greenhouse. Second early crops can be harvested approximately 13 weeks after planting, when the foliage begins to yellow and die back.
Ideal for patios and kitchen gardens. These potatoes are tender and thrive in full sun.
