Thompson and Morgan Charlotte Seed Potatoes 4kg

A tremendously popular second early salad variety, 'Charlotte' potatoes produce distinctive pear-shaped, yellow-skinned tubers. The creamy yellow flesh boasts a first-class flavour, delicious served hot or cold. Frequently found in supermarkets, this variety has received the RHS AGM award. Organic Charlotte has Organic Certification approved by The Soil Association.
For second early crops, plan plantings from March. Before planting, ‘chit’ the seed potatoes by placing them in a cool, bright spot (10°C / 50°F) to encourage sprouting. When growing in the ground, avoid planting in soil where potatoes have grown for two consecutive years to minimise disease risk. Choose a sheltered planting area in full sun with moist, well-drained soil, enriched with plenty of well-rotted manure.
Plant in rows spaced 37cm (15") apart, with 75cm (2'6") between rows. Place seed potatoes in 10cm (4") deep trenches and backfill with soil. When shoots reach 20cm (8"), earth up soil around them, leaving only a few centimetres exposed. Repeat this process after another 3 weeks.
For limited spaces, consider growing in potato bags on the patio. Fill an 8-litre potato bag to just below the top with good quality compost mixed with well-rotted manure. Carefully insert a single chitted potato, shoots pointing upwards, at a depth of 12cm (5") from the surface. Position bags in a sunny spot and water regularly to maintain moist compost.
Weed between rows and ensure plants are well-watered throughout the growing season. If the risk of frost threatens, draw some soil up around the stems to protect them, or move potato bags to a frost-free location like a shed or greenhouse. Second early crops are typically ready for harvest approximately 13 weeks after planting, when the foliage begins to yellow and die back.
