Product Information

  • Delivers pear-shaped tubers
  • Offers creamy yellow flesh of first class flavour
  • Adapts well to multiple culinary uses

A popular and versatile second early salad variety, 'Charlotte' potatoes produce distinctive pear-shaped tubers with yellow skins and firm, creamy yellow flesh. Their superb flavour makes them ideal served hot or cold. This variety has been recognised with an RHS AGM and is a common sight in supermarkets. Certified organic by The Soil Association.
For best results, plant your second early potato crops from March. Chit the seed potatoes beforehand by placing them in a cool, bright spot (around 10°C/50°F) until sprouts appear. When planting in the ground, avoid areas where potatoes have grown in the previous two years to minimise disease risk. Prepare the planting area in a sheltered position in full sun on moist, well-drained soil. Dig in plenty of well-rotted manure.
Plant in rows, spacing the potatoes 37cm (15") apart, with 75cm (2'6") between rows. Place seed potatoes in 10cm (4") deep trenches and cover with soil. When shoots reach 20cm (8"), mound soil around them, leaving just a few centimetres exposed. Repeat this process after three weeks.
For those with limited space, potato bags are an excellent alternative. Fill an 8-litre potato bag almost to the top with good-quality compost mixed with well-rotted manure. Plant a single chitted potato, shoots upwards, at a depth of 12cm (5"). Place the bags in a sunny spot and water regularly to keep the compost moist.
Keep the area weed-free and ensure plants are well-watered throughout the growing season. If the risk of frost threatens, draw some soil up around the stems to protect them, or move potato bags to a frost-free location in a shed or greenhouse.
Harvest second early crops approximately 13 weeks after planting, when the foliage starts to yellow and die back.
Ideal for patios and kitchen gardens. Tender. Prefers full sun. Supplied as 1kg of seed potatoes, plus 5 grow bags.
