Product Information

  • Delivers pear-shaped tubers
  • Offers creamy yellow flesh of first class flavour
  • Adapts well to multiple culinary uses

A hugely popular second early salad potato, 'Charlotte' boasts an RHS AGM and is a common sight in supermarkets. This variety yields pear-shaped, yellow-skinned, waxy tubers with creamy yellow flesh, offering a first-class flavour whether enjoyed hot or cold. Organic Charlotte has Organic Certification approved by The Soil Association.
For second early crops, begin planning from March. Encourage 'chitting' by placing seed potatoes in a cool, bright spot (10°C / 50°F) to sprout before planting. When planting second early potatoes, avoid soil where potatoes have grown for the past two years to minimise disease risk.
Choose a sheltered location in full sun with moist, well-drained soil. Enrich the planting area with plenty of well-rotted manure. Plant potatoes in rows, spacing them 37cm (15") apart, with 75cm (2'6") between rows. Place seed potatoes in 10cm (4") deep trenches and cover with soil.
When shoots reach 20cm (8"), mound soil around them, leaving only a few centimetres visible. Repeat this process after another 3 weeks. For limited spaces, consider growing potatoes in potato bags on the patio. Fill an 8-litre potato bag almost to the top with good quality compost mixed with well-rotted manure. Carefully insert a single chitted potato, shoots upwards, at a depth of 12cm (5") from the soil surface. Place bags in a sunny spot and water regularly to maintain moist compost.
Keep rows weeded and plants well-watered throughout the growing season. If frost threatens, protect stems by drawing soil around them or move potato bags to a frost-free area like a shed or greenhouse.
Second early crops are typically ready for harvest approximately 13 weeks after planting, indicated by yellowing and dieback of the foliage.
