Calycanthus Floridus, more popularly known as the Carolina Allspice, is a hardy and highly adaptable shrub celebrated for its unique characteristics. This plant releases a delightful spicy aroma reminiscent of cinnamon, emanating from both its deep red, magnolia-like flowers and its glossy green foliage.
Blooming from early summer, the Carolina Allspice maintains its fragrance even as the flowers fade, transitioning to a buttery yellow hue in autumn. Its adaptability makes it an easy variety to cultivate and maintain, thriving in various soil types and withstanding less-than-ideal conditions.
Beyond its ornamental appeal, this exotic-looking shrub also offers culinary uses. The twigs can be cut and dried, either in sunlight or an oven, for use in cooking. Additionally, the flowers are frequently incorporated into potpourri due to their natural spicy fragrance.
For optimal growth, Calycanthus plants require well-drained, moist soil and a location in full sun or partial shade. While they can tolerate strong winds, it's advisable to acclimatise them to outdoor conditions for 7 to 10 days upon arrival.
