In areas lacking natural acid soil, cultivate in patio containers using ericaceous compost mixed with John Innes No. 3, and position in dappled shade.
Water regularly until fully established, preferably using rainwater to maintain soil acidity. Feed occasionally with a fertiliser designed for acid-loving plants. Shield from harsh winter winds and strong early morning sunlight to prevent bud drop in early spring. An autumn mulch will further protect the roots from winter's chill.
Little pruning is required beyond maintaining shape; simply trim stems and remove faded blooms immediately after flowering.
