Product Information

  • Hardy annual blooms all summer long
  • Thrives in sun and poor soil
  • Edible petals with peppery flavour

Calendula 'Fiesta Gitana Mixed' has received an RHS Award of Garden Merit, showcasing its exceptional garden performance. Flowering profusely throughout summer, this hardy annual is incredibly easy to grow, making it a superb choice for brightening up outdoor containers. Its compact habit and ability to thrive even in poor soil make it perfect for a variety of garden settings, including patio gardens, kitchen gardens, cottage gardens, wildlife gardens, cut flower gardens, and coastal gardens.
Beyond its ornamental appeal, parts of these flowers are edible, offering a peppery zest that can enhance the flavour and colour of bread. They can also be used as a saffron substitute to add colour to rice dishes.
For cultivation, sow seeds outdoors from April to May in a sunny spot with well-drained soil that has been raked to a fine tilth. Sow thinly at a depth of 1cm (1/2 inch) in drills spaced 30cm (12 inches) apart, ensuring the seeds are covered to exclude light. Keep the area well-watered, especially during dry periods. Germination typically occurs within 5 to 10 days. Once seedlings are robust enough to handle, thin them to 30cm (12 inches) apart.
Alternatively, sow seeds indoors from March to April at a temperature of 18-23°C (65-73°F). Once the seedlings are large enough, transplant them and grow them on in cooler conditions until they are ready for planting outdoors. For winter or early spring blooms, sow calendula seeds in late summer or early autumn and cultivate the plants in a cool greenhouse or conservatory. Expect flowers from May to September.
