Blueberries thrive in well-drained, acidic soil, in a sunny or partially shaded location. In areas lacking naturally acidic soil, cultivate blueberry plants in patio containers using a blend of ericaceous compost and John Innes No. 3. Ideally, water blueberries with rainwater, as the lime content in tap water can gradually reduce soil acidity.
Expect fruit production to commence in the third year. As the berries develop, protect them from birds by covering the plants with netting. From the third year onwards, prune away the oldest stems each autumn to encourage new growth and maintain a healthy plant structure.
