For optimal growth, plant your blueberries in well-drained, acidic soil, in a sunny or semi-shaded location. In areas lacking natural acid soil, cultivate in patio containers using a blend of ericaceous compost and John Innes No. 3. Ideally, use rainwater for watering, as tap water's lime content can diminish soil acidity over time.
Expect fruit production to commence in the third year. Once fruits begin to develop, protect your harvest from birds by covering the plants with netting. From the third year onwards, prune the oldest stems each autumn to encourage new growth and maintain a robust plant structure.
