These fully hardy blueberry plants are simple to cultivate and require little upkeep, flourishing in acidic soil or within patio pots when paired with ericaceous compost. Blueberry 'Brigitta'**: Produces firm, flavoursome fruits with a delightful crispness, perfect for freezing or enjoying fresh from the bush.
Blueberry 'Chandler'**: Bears enormous, firm berries, up to 2g in weight and 20mm (¾inch) in diameter, typically ready for picking in August and September.
Blueberry 'Earliblue'**: An early-maturing variety, yielding clusters of large, light blue, sweetly flavoured berries from the beginning of July.
Blueberries require well-drained, acidic soil, positioned in a sunny or partially shaded spot. In areas lacking naturally acidic soil, cultivate your blueberry plants in patio containers using a mix of ericaceous compost and John Innes No. 3. Ideally, water your blueberries with rainwater, as the lime content in tap water can gradually reduce soil acidity over time.
Expect your blueberry plants to begin fruiting in their third year. Once fruits start to develop, protect them from birds by covering the plants with netting. From the third year onwards, prune the oldest stems each autumn to encourage new growth and maintain a healthy plant structure.
