Darrow' blueberries are a garden favourite, celebrated for their resilience and, above all, their exceptionally large, sweet berries. This delightful variety yields a generous crop of plump blueberries throughout August, perfect for picking straight from the shrub and enjoying as a tasty snack or baking into delicious pies.
Beyond the fruit, this shrub offers seasonal interest with pale pink blossoms adorning the green foliage in spring, followed by vibrant colour changes in autumn. A reliable and hardy addition to your patio or wildlife garden, it's particularly attractive to pollinators.
Blueberries thrive in well-drained, acidic soil in a sunny or semi-shaded location. In areas lacking naturally acidic soil, grow them in patio containers using ericaceous compost mixed with John Innes No. 3. Ideally, water with rainwater to prevent lime from tap water reducing soil acidity.
Expect fruit production to begin in the third year. As the berries develop, protect them from birds with netting. From the third year onwards, prune the oldest stems each autumn to encourage new growth and maintain a healthy plant structure.
