Enjoy abundant harvests of richly flavoured blueberries every August with this superb, self-fertile, mid-season variety. Fully hardy, the “Bluecrop” blueberry is a compact shrub that provides year-round interest, starting with elegant white flowers in spring, followed by colourful foliage that contrasts beautifully with red stems in winter. Ideal for smaller gardens or large patio pots.
Blueberries thrive in well-drained, acidic soil, so choose a sunny or semi-shaded spot. In areas without naturally acidic soil, grow your blueberry plants in patio containers using a mix of ericaceous compost and John Innes No.3. Water with rainwater if possible, as tap water's lime content can gradually reduce soil acidity.
Expect your first fruits in the third year. As the berries ripen, protect them from birds with netting. From the third year onwards, prune the oldest stems each autumn to encourage new growth and maintain a healthy plant structure.
