Product Information

  • Produces heavy crops of sweet fruit each summer
  • Thrives in full sun
  • Compact plant ideal for patios or small plots

Ideal for patios, Blackcurrent ‘Summer Pearls’ is a low-maintenance, compact plant that yields an abundant harvest. Each berry grows up to 1cm in diameter – the largest blackcurrants you’ve ever encountered! This sweet and juicy fruit is excellent for making your own jams or desserts.
Reaching a height and spread of 100cm (39in), Blackcurrants thrive best in a sunny location, though they can tolerate partial shade. Protect them from strong winds and late spring frosts, as these conditions can harm the flowers and reduce fruit yield later in the season. Plant in rich, moist, well-drained soil, incorporating plenty of well-rotted manure before planting.
Plant blackcurrant bushes between late autumn and spring, spacing them 1.5m (5') apart, at a depth of 5cm (2") lower than the soil mark on the stem. Planting slightly deep encourages extra stems to grow from below ground level. After planting, reduce the stems to 2 buds above ground to encourage strong new growth.
Water plants well during dry spells, especially as the fruits develop. Netting the bushes will protect the currants from birds. Harvest blackcurrants from July onwards. After the first season, prune out any thin or weak shoots. In subsequent years, prune damaged or weak shoots, removing 20% of the remaining stems to create an open bush and encourage fresh new growth.
Culinary note: Blackcurrants are delicious fresh in fruit salads or added to summer puddings, and they are suitable for freezing.
