For optimal growth, blackcurrants prefer a sunny location but will tolerate partial shade. Plant in rich, moist, well-drained soil, incorporating plenty of well-rotted manure before planting.
Plant blackcurrant bushes from late autumn to spring, spacing them 1.5m (5') apart and planting 5cm (2") deeper than the previous soil mark on the stem. Planting slightly deeper encourages the development of additional stems from below ground level.
