Product Information

  • Early crops from July with heavy yields
  • Thrives in full sun
  • Produces rich flavourful berries

Blackcurrant ‘Ben Connan’ is a reliably productive and well-regarded variety, favoured for its robust resistance to common diseases like mildew. Expect consistently heavy yields with minimal effort, and benefit from an earlier cropping season than many other blackcurrants – ripening typically begins in July, extending your harvest. Once established, usually after two years, each plant is capable of producing up to 3.5kg of fruit annually for a decade or more.
The flavour is superb, making the fruit ideal for enjoying fresh, or for use in a variety of culinary applications such as jams, puddings and juices. Blackcurrants thrive in full sun but will perform well in partial shade. Protection from cold winds and late frosts is recommended to safeguard the developing flowers and ensure a good yield.
Plant in rich, moist, well-drained soil, enriched with plenty of well-rotted manure before planting. Plant from late autumn to spring, spacing bushes 1.5m apart and ensuring the base of the stem is planted 5cm below the original soil mark – this encourages new stem growth. After planting, prune stems back to two buds above ground to promote strong development. Regular watering is advised during dry spells.
Position: Full Sun.
Height: Up to 1.2m when fully established.
Spread: Up to 1.2m when fully established.
Supplied as a Blackcurrant ‘Ben Connan’ plant in a three-litre pot. Please note, images are for illustrative purposes only and may vary depending on seasonality and growing conditions.
