Thompson and Morgan Blackcurrant Nigrum Summer Pearls Black Plant Pot 9cm

Blackcurrant ‘Summer Pearls’ is a low-maintenance, compact variety, ideal for growing on patios. This prolific plant yields an abundant crop of exceptionally large blackcurrants, each up to 1cm in diameter. These sweet and juicy berries are perfect for homemade jams and desserts. Reaching a height and spread of 100cm (39in).
For optimal growth, plant in a sunny location, although partial shade is tolerated. Shelter from cold winds and late spring frosts, which can damage the flowers and reduce fruit yield. Blackcurrants thrive in rich, moist, well-drained soil; enrich the planting area with well-rotted manure before planting.
Plant bushes from late autumn to spring, spacing them 1.5m (5') apart, setting them 5cm (2") deeper than the previous soil mark to encourage extra stem production. After planting, cut back the stems to two buds above ground to promote strong new growth. Water regularly during dry periods, especially as the fruits develop. Netting helps protect the currants from birds.
Harvest the blackcurrants from July onwards. After the first season, prune away any thin or weak shoots. In subsequent years, prune any damaged or weak shoots, then remove 20% of the remaining stems to open up the bush and encourage fresh new growth.
Culinary tip: Blackcurrants are delicious fresh in fruit salads or summer puddings and are also suitable for freezing.
