Behold the Blackcurrent ‘Summer Pearls’, a compact marvel designed for the modern patio. This low-maintenance variety yields an abundant harvest of exceptionally large blackcurrants, each fruit reaching up to 1cm in diameter. Their sweet and juicy flavour makes them ideal for homemade jams and delectable desserts.
Reaching a height and spread of approximately 100cm (39in), Blackcurrants prefer a position in full sun, though they can tolerate partial shade. For optimal growth, shelter them from harsh winds and late spring frosts, which can harm the blossoms and reduce fruit production. Plant in rich, moist, well-drained soil enriched with well-rotted manure before planting.
Plant these blackcurrant bushes from late autumn to spring, spacing them 1.5m (5') apart and setting them 5cm (2") deeper than the previous soil mark to encourage extra stem growth from below ground. After planting, prune the stems back to just two buds above ground level to encourage robust new growth.
Ensure consistent watering, especially during dry spells as the fruits develop. Protect your crop from birds by netting the bushes. Harvest time arrives in July. In subsequent years, prune away any thin or weak shoots before removing approximately 20% of the remaining stems to create an open bush and stimulate the growth of fresh new shoots.
Culinary note: Blackcurrants shine when enjoyed fresh in fruit salads or incorporated into a vibrant summer pudding. They are also suitable for freezing.
