- Produces large juicy currants
- Mildew resistant
- Supplied in a 3L pot
Often hailed as the sweetest of its kind, Blackcurrant 'Ebony' presents fruit that can be savoured directly from the plant upon ripening. This variety yields some of the largest blackcurrants, ready for harvest from July, facilitated by its admirable spreading form. Simple to cultivate and mildew-resistant, 'Ebony' is a fantastic addition to any garden.
Expect cropping within approximately 16-20 months after planting (or 4-8 months for a cordon plant), with best yields around the same period. Perfectly suited for kitchen and wildlife gardens alike, this hardy plant thrives in full sun, reaching heights and spreads of up to 120cm.
Your Blackcurrant 'Ebony' arrives as a single, established 3-litre pot, containing a robust, pre-pruned 1-year-old bare-root plant, ready to establish quickly once planted. Cordon-trained, it’s ideal for smaller spaces, thriving against walls and fences, developing into a main trunk with short, fruit-bearing side branches on which fruit forms.
Please note that the delivered plant's height and spread are seasonal, and therefore, images serve as an indication only. Blackcurrants prefer a position in full sun but will tolerate partial shade. Shelter from cold winds and late spring frosts to protect the flowers and ensure a bountiful fruit yield. Grow blackcurrants in rich, moist, well-drained soil. Incorporate plenty of well-rotted manure into the ground prior to planting.
Plant your blackcurrant bushes between late autumn and spring, spacing them 1.5m (5') apart, and at a depth 5cm (2") lower than the soil mark on the stem to encourage additional stem growth from below ground level.
