- Thornless canes for easy fruit picking
- Heavy crops from mid-August to autumn
- Great flavour for eating or cooking
Blackberry ‘Loch Ness’ is ideally suited for smaller gardens due to its compact, upright growth habit compared to other blackberry varieties. Bred in Britain, this RHS AGM variety is celebrated for its consistently abundant yields, with established plants often producing up to 3.6kg of fruit annually. Enjoy firm, juicy, conical black fruits from mid-August well into autumn, perfect for snacking, crumbles, or homemade jam. The thornless stems make harvesting a breeze.
For best results, plant in a sunny location with well-drained soil enriched with well-rotted manure or garden compost before planting. Support the stems by training them onto a framework of wires stretched between sturdy 1.8m (6') posts, or against a trellis or wall. Water thoroughly during the first year to ensure the plant establishes well. As the stems grow, train them onto their supports. Protect the developing fruits from birds with netting. Harvest blackberries from August onwards.
Each autumn, prune the canes that have fruited to ground level, and tie in the non-fruiting canes to their supports. In spring, apply a mulch of well-rotted manure or garden compost to the base of the canes to improve moisture retention throughout the summer, ensuring the ground is moist when doing so.
