For vibrant colour and reliable performance in your garden, look no further than dwarf azaleas. These hardy, evergreen shrubs burst into life each spring, becoming smothered in a profusion of blooms that often partially obscure the foliage. Their slow-growing, compact habit makes them ideal, low-maintenance specimens for acid borders and patio containers or pots, thriving in ericaceous compost.
With glossy, evergreen foliage and a spectacular floral display, these azaleas offer year-round interest. Plant in moist, well-drained, acid soil enriched with well-rotted organic matter, in a position with semi or dappled shade, sheltered from harsh, drying winds. While many azaleas tolerate a sunny spot, ensure the soil remains consistently moist. In alkaline soil conditions, cultivate in patio containers or pots using a blend of ericaceous compost and a soil-based compost, such as John Innes No. 3.
Avoid planting too deeply and water regularly throughout the growing season, ideally using rainwater to preserve soil acidity. Feed in spring with a slow-release fertiliser formulated for acid-loving plants. Shield plants from cold winter winds, and apply an autumn mulch to border-grown plants to protect their shallow roots from winter cold, taking care to keep the mulch away from the stem to prevent rot.
