- Flaunts high-yielding, all-male hardy variety
- Gather from March to early June
- Contains with fibre and vitamins A, C, E, K
Gijnlim' Asparagus is a hardy, all-male variety renowned for its abundant yields of succulent spears from late March to early June. Awarded an RHS AGM, this asparagus is celebrated for its sensational taste and tender texture, not to mention its rich source of fibre, folate, and vitamins A, C, E, and K.
Prior to receiving your crowns, prepare well-drained, fertile asparagus beds in a sunny, sheltered location. Clear all weeds and enrich the soil with well-rotted manure or garden compost to enhance its structure and fertility. For cold, wet soils, incorporate sharp sand or grit to improve drainage. Weed by hand to avoid damaging the shallow roots, and water regularly during hot weather.
Each autumn, cut back the yellowing foliage and mulch the crowns with well-rotted manure for frost protection. Feed with a general fertiliser every March. Refrain from harvesting spears in the first season, allowing the plants to develop foliage. In the second year, a limited harvest can be taken in April and May when spears reach 15cm (6") tall. By the third year, full harvesting is possible, but it's advisable to stop cutting by the end of May to allow shoot development. Later harvests risk weakening the plant.
