Product Information

  • Flaunts high-yielding, all-male hardy variety
  • Gather from March to early June
  • Contains with fibre and vitamins A, C, E, K

This 'Gijnlim' Asparagus is a hardy, all-male variety renowned for its abundant yields of delicious spears from late March to early June. Awarded an RHS AGM, this asparagus boasts a sensational flavour and a moist, tender texture, alongside valuable health benefits, providing fibre, folate, and vitamins A, C, E, and K.
Prepare your permanent asparagus beds well in advance of planting in a sunny, sheltered location with fertile, well-drained soil. Ensure the soil is free of weeds and enriched with well-rotted manure or garden compost to improve its structure and fertility. For cold, wet soils, incorporating sharp sand or grit will enhance drainage. Weed by hand to avoid damaging the shallow roots.
During hot periods, water regularly to prevent drying out. In autumn, cut back the yellowing foliage and mulch the crowns with well-rotted manure for frost protection. Feed with a general fertiliser each March.
In the first year, resist harvesting and allow the plants to develop foliage. In the second year, a limited harvest can be taken in April and May when spears reach 15cm (6") tall. By the third year, a full harvest is possible. Stop cutting from the end of May to allow shoot development, as later harvests may weaken the plant.
