- Flaunts high-yielding, all-male hardy variety
- Gather from March to early June
- Contains with fibre and vitamins A, C, E, K
Asparagus ‘Gijnlim’ is a hardy, all-male variety renowned for its abundant yields of delicious spears from late March to early June. This RHS AGM winner boasts a sensational taste and a moist, tender texture, alongside valuable health benefits, being a source of fibre, folate, and vitamins A, C, E, and K.
Prior to receiving your crowns, prepare well-drained, fertile asparagus beds in a sunny, sheltered location. Clear all weeds and enrich the soil with well-rotted manure or garden compost to improve its structure and fertility. On cold, wet soils, incorporate sharp sand or grit to enhance drainage. Weed asparagus beds by hand to avoid damaging the shallow roots. During hot weather, water regularly to prevent drying out.
In autumn, cut back yellowing foliage and mulch the crowns with well-rotted manure for frost protection. Feed with a general fertiliser each March. Resist the temptation to harvest the spears during their first season, allowing foliage to develop. A limited crop of spears may be harvested in the second year during April and May, when spears reach 15cm (6") tall. Full harvesting can commence in the third year. It is advisable to cease cutting by the end of May to allow shoot development. Later harvests risk weakening the plant.
