Product Information

  • Flaunts high-yielding, all-male hardy variety
  • Gather from March to early June
  • Contains with fibre and vitamins A, C, E, K

Gijnlim’ Asparagus is a hardy, all-male variety, renowned for its abundant yields of succulent spears from late March to early June. This superb cultivar has earned an RHS AGM, a testament to its sensational flavour and delightfully moist, tender texture. Asparagus is a source of fibre, folate, and vitamins A, C, E, and K, making it a healthy addition to any diet. Prepare your permanent asparagus beds in a sunny, sheltered location before your crowns arrive, ensuring they can be planted promptly. Asparagus thrives in fertile, well-drained soil. Clear the area of weeds and enrich the soil with well-rotted manure or garden compost to improve its structure and fertility. For cold, wet soils, incorporate sharp sand or grit to enhance drainage. Weed by hand to avoid damaging the shallow roots. During hot weather, water regularly to prevent drying out. In autumn, cut back the yellowing foliage and mulch the crowns with well-rotted manure to protect them from frost. Each March, feed with a general fertiliser. In the first year, resist harvesting and allow the plants to develop foliage. In the second year, a limited harvest of 15cm (6") spears can be taken during April and May. By the third year, a full harvest can be enjoyed. To avoid weakening the plant, it is recommended to stop cutting from the end of May, allowing the shoots to develop into foliage.
