Product Information

  • Supplied as a packet containing 100 seeds
  • Blooms reach up to 60cm height and 20cm spread
  • Calendula petals are edible and suitable for salads

Bring a burst of fiery orange, soft apricot and creamy hues to your garden with Thompson and Morgan Art Shades Calendula Seeds, creating magical displays that glisten in the sun from June to September and attract pollinators to your flower beds. You'll find these English marigolds easy to grow by direct sowing in full sun, thriving in well-drained soil and reaching up to 60cm in height. Enjoy not only their vibrant beauty but also their edible petals, which add a zesty touch to summer salads and can be used as a saffron substitute. Direct sow calendula seeds outdoors where they are to grow from April to May. Choose a position in full sun on well-drained soil which has been raked to a fine tilth. Sow seeds thinly, at a depth of one centimetre in drills spaced 30cm apart and cover the seed with its own depth of soil to exclude light. Water the ground regularly, especially during dry periods. Germination usually takes five to ten days. When calendula seedlings are large enough to handle, thin them out to 30cm apart. Water regularly until plants are fully established. Deadhead faded calendula flowers to encourage more blooms to be produced and prevent them from self-seeding. Culinary note: Calendula flowers are edible. The petals have been used as a substitute for saffron, and they make a bright and zesty addition to salads. Product Specifications: Position: Full sun. Height: Up to 60cm when fully established. Spread: Up to 20cm when fully established. Images shown are for guidance only of the expected results from plants upon maturity. Different growing conditions might vary the results. Images may be included to illustrate supply, but can vary due to seasonal changes (e.g., deciduous plants lose leaves in colder months).
