How to Grow: Plant apple trees in well-drained soil in a sheltered, sunny position. Prepare the planting hole with plenty of well-rotted manure or compost. Plant the tree at its original soil level, firming the soil and staking if necessary. Keep weeds clear within 30cm of the base and apply mulch to retain moisture and protect roots. Water during dry periods. Prune immediately after planting, removing the central stem to just above the highest side branch, and follow pruning instructions for the next three years to establish a strong framework. Thin fruits in July, leaving two per cluster for best quality and size. Trees will begin cropping in approximately two years, with optimal yields around five years.
