The Alocasia Zebrina, often called the Elephant Ear Plant, is a tender perennial that makes a fantastic houseplant. Originating from the Philippines, this tropical beauty features waxy, deep green leaves adorned with striking white-light green veins, creating an eye-catching texture that will be an excellent focal point in your home.
What sets this plant apart are its exotic-looking, pale cream and black tiger-striped stems, which add a unique touch to any living space. For optimal growth, position your Alocasia in bright, filtered light, away from direct sunlight that could scorch the leaves. Choose a warm room with a consistent temperature above 15°C (59°F) – keep it away from central heating and draughty doorways.
Water regularly, allowing the soil surface to dry out slightly between waterings, and always ensure the pot drains thoroughly afterwards. During the winter months, reduce watering to prevent the soil from becoming waterlogged, which can lead to root rot. Feed your houseplant regularly from March to September when it's actively growing. Alocasia thrives in a humid environment, so place it on a tray filled with pebbles and water; as the water evaporates, it will increase the humidity around the plant.
