- Rich purple red foliage all year round
- Compact slow growing tree
- Thrives in sun or semi shade
The Thompson and Morgan Acer Palmatum Atropurpureum is a small, slow-growing deciduous tree, celebrated for its iconic deep purple-red foliage and elegant form. Its compact growth makes it ideal for smaller gardens and container growing, requiring minimal upkeep. This variety develops a rounded canopy, offering a vibrant display that evolves throughout the seasons.
The foliage begins as a striking purple-red, accompanied by purple flowers, before transforming into brilliant crimson hues in autumn. After shedding its leaves in winter, it returns in spring with renewed colour. Perfect as a standalone feature, it also complements Japanese-themed borders or thrives beneath larger trees where sunlight is limited.
For optimal growth, plant in moist, fertile, well-drained soil, in a sunny or partially shaded location, shielded from strong winds which can scorch the finely cut leaves. Alternatively, plant in large containers or pots using a soil-based compost such as John Innes No.3. Water regularly during the growing season until established. Acers require little pruning other than to maintain their shape. Lightly trim stems if necessary from late autumn to midwinter.
Position: Sun, semi-shade, dappled shade. Height: Up to 4m. Spread: Up to 4m. Supplied in a 3 Litre nursery pot.
