Thompson & Morgan Acer Palmatum Atropurpureum Plant in Pot 7cm

Acer palmatum Atropurpureum, or Japanese Maples, are small, slow-growing deciduous trees, celebrated for their iconic deep purple-red foliage and elegant form. Their compact size and extremely slow growth rate make them ideal for smaller gardens and container planting, requiring minimal maintenance. This variety's rounded habit forms a delightful canopy of colour. Throughout the seasons, the foliage transforms from purple-red in spring, accompanied by delicate purple flowers, to a vibrant crimson display in autumn before shedding its leaves in winter, only to return with renewed vigour in spring.
Perfect as standalone specimens, these Acers also lend themselves beautifully to Japanese-themed borders or planting beneath larger trees where sunlight is limited. For optimal growth, plant in moist, fertile, well-drained soil in a sunny or dappled shade location, ensuring shelter from strong winds that can scorch the finely cut leaves. Alternatively, use a soil-based compost such as John Innes No. 3 when planting in large pots or containers. Water regularly during the growing season until established and shield from strong winds. Acers need little pruning, mainly to maintain their shape. If necessary, lightly trim stems from late autumn to midwinter.
