- Deep red leaves turn fiery crimson
- Compact tree perfect for containers
- Low-maintenance Japanese maple
Acer palmatum Atropurpureum, or Japanese Maples, are small, slow-growing deciduous trees celebrated for their iconic deep purple-red foliage and elegant form. Their compact nature and exceptionally slow growth rate make them easy to manage, ideally suited to smaller gardens and container growing. This variety’s rounded habit allows a canopy of rich colour to develop, with the foliage transforming through the seasons. Emerging purple-red in spring alongside purple flowers, the leaves evolve into a fiery crimson display in autumn before falling in winter, only to return in spring with renewed vigour. Perfect as stand-alone specimen plants, they also excel in creating Japanese-themed borders or beneath larger trees where sunlight is limited. For optimal growth, plant in moist, fertile, well-drained soil in a sunny or partially shaded location, ensuring shelter from strong winds which can scorch the finely cut leaves. Alternatively, use soil-based compost when planting in large pots or containers. Water regularly throughout the growing season until the plant is well established. Minimal pruning is required, simply trim lightly from late autumn to midwinter to maintain the desired shape. Position in sun, semi-shade, or dappled shade. Expect a height and spread of up to 4m.
