- Deep red leaves turn fiery crimson
- Compact tree perfect for containers
- Low-maintenance Japanese maple
Acer palmatum Atropurpureum, or Japanese Maples, are small, slow-growing deciduous trees celebrated for their iconic deep purple-red foliage and elegant form. Their compact size and extremely slow growth rate make them exceptionally easy to care for, ideal for smaller gardens and container planting. The compact, rounded habit of this variety allows for a canopy of rich colour to develop. The foliage transforms from purple-red foliage and flowers in spring, to a fiery crimson shade in autumn before shedding its leaves in winter, only to return in spring with vibrant colour. Perfect as a stand-alone specimen or for creating Japanese-themed borders, they can also thrive under larger trees where sunlight is limited. For optimal growth, plant in moist, fertile, well-drained soil in a sunny, partially shaded or dappled shaded location, sheltered from strong winds that can scorch the finely cut leaves. Alternatively, grow in large pots or containers using soil-based compost. Water regularly during the growing season until established and protect from strong winds. Acers require minimal pruning, mainly to maintain their shape. Lightly trim stems from late autumn to midwinter if necessary. Position: Sun, Semi Shade, Dappled Shade. Height and Spread: Up to 4m.
