- Deep purple-red leaves turn crimson in autumn
- Ideal for pot and small garden
- Requires minimal pruning
The Acer palmatum Atropurpureum, known for its iconic deep purple-red foliage, is a small, slow-growing deciduous tree with an architectural presence. Its compact nature and unhurried growth make it exceptionally easy to maintain, ideal for small gardens and container cultivation. This variety boasts a rounded habit, forming a captivating canopy of colour that transforms throughout the seasons. From spring, the foliage emerges purple-red, accompanied by delicate purple flowers, before evolving into fiery crimson shades in autumn. During winter, the tree sheds its leaves, only to return in spring with a vibrant burst of colour. Perfectly suited as a stand-alone specimen, this Acer also lends itself to Japanese-themed borders or underplanting beneath larger trees in partially shaded areas. For optimal growth, plant in any moist, fertile, well-drained soil, in a sunny or dappled shade location, shielded from strong winds that can scorch the finely cut leaves. Alternatively, use a soil-based compost such as John Innes No.3 in large containers or pots. Water regularly throughout the growing season until established and protected from strong winds. Acers require minimal pruning, primarily to maintain their shape. Lightly trim stems, if necessary, from late autumn to midwinter. Position: Sun, Semi Shade, Dappled Shade. Height: Up to 4m. Spread: Up to 4m. Supplied in 1x 10.5cm nursery pot. Note: Images are intended as a guide and reflect expected results upon maturity; growing conditions can influence outcomes.
