Before you start, choose a warm, dry day (above 10°C) and clear everything off the deck. You’ll need to give your decking a good scrub with a deck brush. This will remove dirt, loose bits of wood and any loose coatings. Then hose it down thoroughly, or better still, give it a blast with a jet wash. You need to get rid of all the dirt, if you don’t the paint won’t stick to your wood. To get the best result use Ronseal Decking Cleaner & Reviver – this will make the paint stick better and last longer. Let your deck dry fully before painting. To prepare new wood, let it weather naturally for around six months before painting it. This ensures that any pre-treatment has eroded giving a fresh surface to apply the paint. Once the wood has weathered, use a scrubbing brush and some decking cleaner to completely remove traces of the pre-treatment. Rinse it thoroughly with water, ideally using a pressure washer. To make sure you’ve removed all the pre-treatment, throw some water on the decking. If it beads, you need to keep scrubbing and cleaning.
