Which type of pillow is best?

When it comes to choosing a pillow, there are three main types: feather and down, microfibre, and memory foam. No one type is better than the other as it all comes down to personal preference. Feather and down pillows are filled usually filled with duck or goose plumage. Feather pillows are often more structured, while down pillows are made from smaller, fluffier feathers for a softer feel. Many pillows use a combination of the two for a cosy compromise between support and softness. Microfibre pillows (also called down alternative pillows) are filled with a synthetic fibre that imitates the feel of feathers. This makes them a good option if you suffer from allergies. Finally, memory foam pillows are designed to mold to the shape of your head and neck for customised support with a firmer feel.

How often should you replace pillows?

Pillows need changing more frequently than you might think. On average, a pillow should last you between one and two years. You'll be able to tell when it's time to find a replacement, as your pillow will start to lose its shape. You might find that you wake up with a stiff neck or that your pillow no longer bounces back into shape when folded in half.

Should your shoulders be on pillows when sleeping?

You should not place your shoulders on the pillow, as this can cause your spine to curve which may lead to stiffness and a sore back. Your pillow should be positioned comfortably underneath your head and neck to offer optimum support. You may find that one pillow is enough, otherwise you can lie two pillows on top of one another.
