As well as smoke alarms, when it comes to home safety and security, every single property needs at least one carbon monoxide detector. They provide peace of mind and are invaluable if anything ever does go wrong with one of your fuel-burning appliances.

What is carbon monoxide?

Carbon monoxide is a toxic gas that’s created by the incomplete combustion (or burning) of carbon. It’s colourless and has no smell, which is why we need carbon monoxide detectors to alert us if it’s in the atmosphere.

Where should a carbon monoxide detector be placed?

You should place a carbon monoxide detector in every hallway or landing, as well as in every room that contains a fuel-burning appliance (boilers, gas hobs and log burners, for example). Make sure that your alarm isn’t in a cupboard or a space that has lots of condensation and that it’s at least one metre away from any fuel burning appliance.

What causes a carbon monoxide alarm to go off?

If your carbon monoxide detector goes off, you and anyone else in the building should leave immediately. If possible, open any windows and doors and ensure that all fuel-burning appliances have been turned off. Wait until the alarm stops sounding and only re-enter if you’re sure it’s safe to do so. If you think there may be an issue with a gas appliance, you’ll need to call your gas supplier.
