Start plug plants in pots and nurture them in frost-free conditions. After they are well-developed and all frost risk has passed, gradually acclimatise the mallow to outdoor conditions over 7-10 days. Transplant into borders or containers filled with moist, well-drained soil in a sunny location. If planting in containers, use a soil-based compost like John Innes No. 3. Feed and water regularly during the establishment phase. Once settled, these Lavatera plants need only occasional attention.
The best time to prune is in the spring, after the last frost and as the buds begin to swell. Cut back all stems firmly to around 30cm above ground level. Mallows can be slow to show new growth in spring, so be patient with plants that appear dormant after winter; they may simply be late to emerge.
