Washing Machines

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it cheaper to use a washing machine at night?

While energy prices are often lowest between 10pm and 5am, do not leave your washing machine on over night. This is because it may pose a fire risk.

If you are a night-owl or a morning person who would normally be awake during these hours, it may be cheaper for you to use a washing machine during these times.

How long do washing machines last?

Typically, washing machines last 10-13 years, though this can vary between small washing machines and larger models.

If your washing machine breaks down before this point, it may be worth trying to repair it rather than purchasing a new one. Remember, the older a machine is, the more likely it is to break down.

How much electricity does a washing machine use?

Usually, washing machines do not use a set amount of electricity. Instead, it will vary depending on how often a machine is used, the length of the selected wash cycle, and the settings for revolutions per minute (rpm). A1600 rpm washing machine cycle will use more energy than a1000 rpm washing machine cycle, and so on.

For a clearer idea of how much power your machine uses, check the energy efficiency label. This will specify the machines kilowatt hours (kWh). Simply multiply this by the number of hours your washing machine is on for, and you will have an approximate idea of how much electricity is used per cycle.

How much water does a washing machine use?

A washing machine uses approximately 50 litres of water per cycle. This may differ depending on the size and capacity of the model in question, with 10kg washing machines using less water than compact models.

How do you choose the capacity of a washing machine?

You should choose the capacity of a washing machine based on the average load size you expect to do. As a rule of thumb, a 7-9kg washing machine will be large enough to hold laundry for a family of four. If you live alone, you may be better off with a small washing machine, or even a compact washing machine if you are lacking in space.
