Bedside Tables

Choosing bedside tables for your bedroom

A bedside table can give you a useful surface for a lamp, phone, book, or glass of water while also adding a storage option to your bedroom.

Choose a simple bedside table if you mainly need a spot for everyday essentials, or opt for a bedside cabinet with drawers or cupboards when you want to keep more things close at hand.

For a balanced bedroom, a set of two bedside tables on either side of the bed give off a symmetrical, put-together look. Alternatively, choose different designs that share a colour, material or finish for a more eclectic, relaxed feel.

Shop handy bedside cabinets with drawers and storage

A bedside table with drawers gives you useful storage for the things you want close by at night while keeping smaller items out of sight.

Choose a single-drawer bedside cabinet for everyday essentials, or look for two- and three-drawer designs if you need more bedroom storage. Shelves can be useful for books and baskets, while cupboards provide enclosed storage for a cleaner look.

For additional storage, coordinate your bedside tables with a chest of drawers or other bedroom storage.

Narrow and wall-mounted bedside tables for smaller spaces

If you're working with a compact bedroom, a small or narrow bedside table can provide the essentials without taking up too much floor space.

Slim bedside tables can be particularly useful when there's only a small gap beside the bed. Look for a design with enough surface space for the things you use every day without making the room feel crowded.

Where suitable, wall-mounted or floating bedside tables can also keep the floor underneath clear. This can give a smaller bedroom a more open feel and make cleaning underneath easier.

Shop your style with wooden, white, and modern bedside cabinets

A wooden bedside table can add warmth and natural texture to a bedroom, while white, black and neutral finishes offer an easy way to complement your existing furniture.

For a more modern bedroom, look for clean lines and simple finishes. More traditional bedside cabinets can add character through painted finishes, panelled doors or classic detailing.

Keep in mind that you don't need every piece of bedroom furniture to match exactly. Choosing bedside tables with a similar colour, material or finish to your bed, wardrobe, or chest of drawers can create a coordinated look without making the room feel too uniform.

FAQs

How high should a bedside table be?

As a general guide, choose a bedside table that's around the same height as the top of your mattress, or slightly lower. This makes it easier to reach your essentials while you're in bed.

How wide should a bedside table be?

The right width depends on the space available and how much storage you need. Measure the gap beside your bed before choosing, and check the depth too if your bed is close to a wardrobe or other furniture.

What's the difference between a bedside table and a bedside cabinet?

The terms are often used interchangeably. A bedside table may have a simple tabletop, legs or an open shelf, while a bedside cabinet usually includes enclosed storage such as drawers or a cupboard.
