What time of year should you replace patio doors?

There's no hard and fast rule on this, though you may find it best to replace your patio doors in the late spring or summer when the weather is warmer. This will prevent your home from getting too cold while your house is open to the elements as the doors are replaced.

That being said, if your current patio doors are poorly fitted and letting in a draft or losing heat through single glazing, it may be best to replace them as soon as possible rather than waiting for the weather to warm up. Most importantly, you should try to avoid replacing patio doors on a damp day if possible.

What to look for when buying a patio door

If you're looking to buy a patio door, there are a few important things to consider. Firstly, material: uPVC, timber and aluminium are the most popular options. Each is hardwearing - the best fit for you will depend on your budget and whether you prefer a traditional look, something inspired by industrial design or even a coloured frame. Next, consider closing mechanism. Do you want a hinged, bi-fold or sliding doors?

When choosing your glass, cost and energy efficiency are important considerations. Though double or triple-glazed doors will cost more, it will reduce the amount of heat lost through your doors - potentially saving you money on your heating bills in the long run.

Why are patio doors so expensive?

Patio doors tend to be more expensive than other external doors, such as front doors, as they are much larger. Typically, they also cost more than garage doors, as they usually include sizeable panes of glass that are expensive to manufacture. This being said, patio doors often have complex folding mechanisms and are built to last.

Though they may be an investment at first, they are long-lasting, durable and don't require annual maintenance like wooden external doors, so will not need replacing for a long time.
