Homebase was founded in 1979 and we’ve been proudly serving customers ever since.
Founded in 1979, Homebase a product of Sainsbury’s and GB-Inno-BM, led by CEO Gurth Hoyar-Millar.
Throughout the 80s, our stores opened nationwide, with a branch in Croydon being the first to open its doors.
The 90s brought with it expansion as Sainsbury’s bought Texas Homecare and rebranded these stores to Homebase.
We entered a period of transformation in the 00s, being sold to Shroder Ventures and then again to GUS. The acquisition to GUS saw Homebase eventually become part of Home Retail Group. During this time, we introduced fantastic concessions and opened Homebase Design Centres, where we provided our customers with even more design advice than ever before.
The latter part of the decade saw our sale to Wesfarmers and the rebranding of some stores to Bunnings Warehouse.
Homebase is a truly resilient business, as shown in 2018 and onwards. Purchased by Hilco Capital, we entered a CVA agreement and restructured. The turnaround accelerated with over 50 stores upgraded to give our customers the best possible shopping experience.
In early February 2020, we announced our return to profit earlier than expected, largely down to the tenacity of our loyal team members, a sustainable store proposition plan and a redesigned website.
