Buying guide to tumble dryers
Don't wait for the sun! An efficient, powerful tumble dryer gets your clothes beautifully dry whatever the weather.
Find the right model for you in the Homebase range of tumble dryers.
When you're looking for a tumble dryer you'll be choosing between a condenser and a vented machine. Here's what they do and how they work ...
tend to dry clothes quickly (but often use more electricity than vented dryers). Because they don't need to be vented, these tumble dryers are easier to position and can even go in cupboards. Condenser tumble dryers dry your wash by taking air from within the drum, which is heated and then blown through the tumbling clothes. The moisture-laden air is passed through a heat exchanger, where the water recondenses. This collects in a built-in tray that's easily removed and emptied.
This type of tumble dryer is often a wise choice for your wallet - running costs can be much lower than those for condenser models. Vented tumble dryers release steam via a hose that can be fitted to a wall vent, or passed out of a window. If you're using a wall vent, check the outlet position, located on the rear, left or right of your appliance, before buying to make sure it'll be OK for your kitchen. See all vented tumble dryers.
Tumble dryers are graded from A to G for:
- Drying performance
- Energy efficiency
A rated appliances are the most efficient and G rated the least. For the best performing machines, look for one with the AAA rating. These ratings are also colour-coded with red, amber and green, so it's easy to see at a glance what energy consumption a tumble dryer has. A rated appliances often cost a bit more to buy but can use just half the electricity of a G rated model.
Settings range from 80 to 160 minutes, so choose a machine with a generous timer length if you regularly dry heavy loads. A range of temperature settings gives more versatility - lower temperatures are kinder to delicate fabrics.
Varies between 3kg and 6kg. Larger drums are best for drying duvets or big family loads.

If you're putting your tumble dryer above a washing machine, we suggest you use a separate stacking kit to hold the appliance safely.
