Step by Step Instructions

1 Check your lawn for moss
2 Scarify or rake any moss away
3 Tidy your lawn and rake up any fallen leaves and debris
4 Aerate your lawn
5 Use an autumn feed
  • Step 1. Check your lawn for moss

Lawn moss is a very common problem for gardeners. It can be caused by many different factors such as drought or waterlogging.
  • Step 2. Scarify or rake any moss away

Either by using a spring-tine rake on smaller lawns, or a mechanical scarifier on larger lawns, remove any moss.

  • Step 3. Tidy your lawn and rake up any fallen leaves and debris

Next do the same process to remove, leaves and debris from the surface. This will help prevent waterlogging and yellowing from lack of sunlight.

  • Step 4. Aerate your lawn

Aerating your lawn helps water penetrate the soil and improve drainage. This pierces the ground with small holes allowing air, water and nutrients access to the grass roots. Autumn is a great time to aerate your lawn because the grass is still growing and the weather is not too dry.

  • Step 5. Use an autumn feed

Use an autumn feed that’s low in nitrogen and high in potash to strengthen your grass, toughening it up ready for the winter months. You can apply the autumn feed any time from September to mid-November when the weather is fair, the soil is moist and the grass is dry and frost-free. Although most spreader packs can cover 100 square metres, if you have a large lawn, you may want to purchase a large bag and use a spreader to make application quick and easy.
